How to Apply a China Visa in Hong Kong

Am I able to apply for a China visa from Hong Kong? This is a frequently asked question in many forums pertaining to China visas. Actually, in most cases, one is expected to apply for a Chinese visa in his home country, but if you are travelling abroad or live in China, Hong Kong will be an ideal place to apply for a China visa.

Before making the application, you had better do some research on China’s visa exemption policies, especially the 72- and 144-hour visa-free transit schemes to see if you can avoid the hassle of getting a Chinese visa. If you still need one, then proceed with the application.

Generally speaking, there are two methods to apply China visa in Hong Kong, that is, applying in person at the China Visa Office Hong Kong or using an agent. Applying in person costs less but requires more effort, on the contrary, using an agent saves much energy but is expensive.

Better Apply for China Visa in Home Country than in Hong Kong

Though it’s feasible to apply for a China visa in Hong Kong, we advise you to make the application in your country if you just visit Hong Kong temporarily. The reason is that a Hong Kong ID card is often required for the application. Temporary visitors may face more difficulties in making the application in person. By the way, if you live in mainland China and wish to renew your visa in Hong Kong, you can try your luck but the result is not assured.

It's possible for you to apply at the visa center in HK.
Also, you may also obtain the visa in Finland with your Finland residence permit.

The invitation letter is not a must for tourist visa, you can provide the documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc as a proof of your stay in China.

I've heard a American citizen applied for a z visa to Shenzhen in HK and succeeded, but normally it's hard to apply for a China work visa in the third country or area, so I advise to apply in your home country. Or you can find and consult an agency to see if there is possibility.

Hi there, in Guangzhou, the 144-hour visa-free entry permit is only stamped in the airport, which means you need to fly in. A train trip is not practical.

British national backpacking and will enter China on month 4 of trip
Hi,

I am going backpacking in November 2024 for 7 months and plan to enter China in May for 1 month. As such, I will be unable to apply for a visa in the UK as it will expire before I enter China. Will I be able to get a visa from Hong Kong to enter China? I know it's difficult but wondering if you have an increased chance as a British citizen due to Hong Kong formerly being British.

Thanks

It is not must and just prepare other required documents.

The passport doesn’t get stamp but you get an entry slip. That is equivalent to a stamp on the passport.
