How to count the layover time of 144 hours?

It counts from 00:00 of the day following passengers' arrival. That is to say, the allowed time to stay is actually longer than 144 hours.

Eg: If one arrives at 6:00 am on July 1, the layover time counts from 00:00 of July 2 and the passenger should hold a ticket with the scheduled departure time before 23:59 of July 7. In this case, the allowed stay period is 162 hours in maximum.

What can I do during the 144 hours?

If using the visa-free transit in Shanghai, after visiting the Bund, Huangpu River, and skyscrapers, one can travel to Suzhou to see the classical Chinese gardens and elegant water towns. A stroll by the West Lake in Hangzhou and a taste of the delicious local snacks must be a perfect ending of the trip.

A trip to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Zhuhai along China's south coast is a good choice to feel the energetic economic development.

Business Conferences and Trade Fairs

6 days are enough to attend various trade fairs or forums in Beijing, Shanghai, or the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, conduct market research, review suppliers' factories, or sign contracts with partners.

Jessica, unfortunately, your flight itinerary is not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Simply speaking, you are not allowed to have two mainland Chinese stops in a row. To be precise, your mainland Chinese stop has to have both immediate points, before and after in two different countries or eligible territories.

It is only 24 hour visa free transit that allows you to travel via China with more than one stop in a row.

To conclude, if you retain your actual flight itinerary you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance or if you can, you will alter/adapt your flight itinerary in order to make it eligible for 144 hour visa free transit by inserting a return flight to some third country/territory between Beijing and Shanghai. Fort example, you can do the following:

US - Beijing - Taiwan or South Korea - Shanghai - Hong Kong

This is the only alternative if you do not plan to obtain visas. I'm sorry for bringing you these unfavorable information.

Are there rules about how long you can stay in Hong Kong?
So we are US citizens. Can we do LAX to Paris, then Paris to Shanghai, leave Shanghai within the 144 hours to Hong Kong. Is there a limit of time we can stay in Hong Kong or is it another 144 hours? Then we’d go Hong Kong to LAX.

If you have dropped out Beijing from your flight itinerary, that makes you eligible for 144 hour visa free transit valid for wider Shanghai area and no visa is required.

After Shanghai, you can take ma flight to Hong Kong where you are not limited with 144 hour visa free transit because Hong Kong has separate immigration/visa policy from mainland China. In other words, you can stay in Hong Kong absolutely visa free for up to 90 days.

To conclude, your new itinerary is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai and you can proceed with your entire travel plan visa free and with absolute peace of mind.

Visa free transit eligible itinerary
Hi,
I am EU citizen with nationality eligible for the 144H visa free, not for full travel without visa. I have already brought tickets to this flight itinerary and I am confused if this can be visa free.

Europe country - Beijing PEK, 3-4h layover and then another flight with same company to PVG Shanghai.

From Shanghai I plan to book a flight to Bangkok. Can I apply for 144h visa free transit in Shanghai and take the flight to Bangkok a few days later? Or I need to leave with a flight to Bangkok in the same day? What is allowed without visa?

David, unfortunately, your flight itinerary is not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

To conclude, if you do not want to obtain a Chinese visa in advance, your imperative is to buy your ticket from Shanghai to Bangkok in order that your transit time in China, counting from your first scheduled landing (in your case in Beijing) until your last scheduled departure (in your case from Shanghai) remains shorter than 24 hours. In other words, your flight for Bangkok should depart within 24 hours in relation to the arrival of your flight in Beijing.

If you decide to use 24 hour visa free transit, you can use separate tickets and unrelated airlines. As far as the formalities are concerned, the first thing you will do upon your landing in Beijing will be to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets because your next flight will be a domestic one. After your permit is granted, you will proceed to the immigration and then to your flight to Shanghai and from there to your flight to Bangkok.

Transit without passing immigration?
Hi!
My flight itinerary is:

Budapest - Guangzhou (Baiyun International Airport,Terminal 2) - Guangzhou (Baiyun International Airport,Terminal 2) - Kunming (for 6 days) - Laos (by train)

I hope to use the 144 hour visafree entry in Kunming and to transit Guagnzhou without leaving the transit area and needing to go to thru immigration and therefore not breaking the A - B - C rule

Will that be possible?

Georgi, unfortunately your itinerary is not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

As you know, when traveling on 144 hour visa free transit, you cannot have two mainland Chinese stops in a row and you have exactly that, Guangzhou and then Kunming. This is something that definitely disqualifies you from enjoying 144 hour visa free transit and you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance, before your departure toward China.

In China as it is in Schengen area as well, all the formalities are done at the very first airport. In other words, you will formally enter China in Guangzhou and your flight Guangzhou - Kunming will be a domestic flight. Travel based on 144 hour visa free transit does not allow a domestic travel between two different transit zones, in this case, Guangdong province and Kunming city. I'm sorry.

Transit visa 144 hours
Hi I have booked the following itinerary

Am I eligible for the 144 free hours, staying in Shanghai for three days but 2 are transit days from cruise and to the airport?

Yes, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit valid for wider Shanghai area.

The main thing you should take care of is the segment Japan - Shanghai. You should be aware that you are not allowed to have any mainland Chinese port docking immediately before Shanghai. In other words, you cannot have a docking of this kind:

Japan - Tianjin - Shanghai

However, you can have something like this:

Japan - Tianjin - South Korea - Shanghai.

It is always important that your mainland Chinese stop has both of its immediate stops, before and after, in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau).

So, if all the requirements I have mentioned are satisfied, you are free to go and enjoy your stay in Shanghai absolutely visa free. Have a nice trip.

Transit from a country not of origin.
My details are a bit complicated.
I am dual citizen with UK and TR passports. I am currently in the US with a visa in my TR passport. I would like to visit Beijing (US > Seoul > Beijing > Paris). The Chinese consulate in US say they cannot give me a visa in my UK passport because I did not enter the US with it. Can I take advantage of the 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing?

Yes, you can. Visa free transit has (almost) nothing with the visa policy of China and consequently the only detail that is really important is that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese stop are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) and that you hold a passport of the country that is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. It is irrelevant where your immediate points will be in relation to your domicile (origin) country.

To conclude, your itinerary as you have presented it, is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Beijing area and you are undoubtedly free to travel on UK passport. You should just take care that you do not have any additional landing within mainland China beside Beijing and you cannot return to Seoul immediately after Beijing. Have a nice journey.
