Do foreigners need to register when staying in private accommodation?
I'll be traveling to Beijing and Shanghai later this year with my family. My wife's (Chinese) sister lives in Beijing and we might stay with her. Do we need to register at the police station if we do that?
Alternatively, we might stay in a Xiao Zhu home (similar to AirBnB). Would we need to register at the police then? We stayed elsewhere in a Xiao Zhu and the home owner had to accompany us to register, which was a huge hassle.
If it's too much trouble, we'll probably just get hotel rooms.

As I know, you can register online through the official WeChat account 北京公安出入境 easily after entering. You can ask your wife's sister to help with the registration.

The public buses are not available between these places. I think you need to charter a car.
