Thank you for your inquiry.
G99 is not in service recently. Due to the influence of the coronavirus breakout, some of the trains were cancelled for traffic control. There are still G85 at 8am and G1305 at 3:25pm in service from Shanghai to Guangzhou now. You may choose between them. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Is it recommended to take a flight or train to Guangzhou?

Flight is much faster and some time with good discount. However, during summer time, it can be influenced by weather problem. High speed trains take longer time but the trip itself is very smooth. If you want to save your time on this trip, you are recommended with flight. If you are traveling for sightseeing, I think you can experience the rail service.

I read online that it is advisable to reach station 1.5 hour in advance to collect the tickets. So to be safe, you may consider to be there around 6:30am or at least before 7am.
